Summary

GPS-Squitter is a system concept that merges the capabilities of Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS) and the Mode S beacon radar. The result is an integrated concept for seamless surveillance and data link that permits equipped aircraft to participate in ADS or beacon ground environments. This offers many possibilities for transition from beacon to ADS-based surveillance. This paper briefly defines the GPS-Squitter concept and its principal applications. The thrust of the paper is the presentation of surface and airborne surveillance measurements made at Hanscom Field in Bedford, Massachusetts and at the Logan International Airport in Boston. In each case the measurements show the excellent surveillance performance provided by this concept.

TCAS-II: design and validation of the high-traffic-density surveillance subsystem

Summary

Lincoln Laboratory, under FAA sponsorship, is developing an airborne collision avoidance system (TCAS II), concentrating primarily on the air-to-air surveillance subsystem. The surveillance functions required are to detect the presence of nearby transponder equipped aircraft, and then generate a surveillance track on each aircraft, issuing range and altitude reports once per second. The development effort from mid-1981 to the present has focused on the surveillance problems associated with high aircraft density. A number of surveillance techniques to deal with the high density environment have been identified and evaluated mainly through airborne measurements. A TCAS II design was synthesized, and this design was subjected to in-flight testing in the Los Angeles Basin using a Boeing 727. Results indicate that the performance objectives have been met.

Airborne radars for surveillance and weapon delivery

Summary

Airborne radars such as AW ACS capable of large area surveillance of aircraft over both land and sea have become a reality in the past few years. Soon to follow are radars capable of large area surveillance of moving ground traffic. Through their ability to accurately report enemy movement and to target individual enemy ground vehicles, these radars will undoubtedly have a large impact on intelligence gathering, resource allocation, command, control and the damage assessment functions. This report describes relationships and trade-offs fundamental in the design of airborne surveillance radars in various operational roles. It describes radar capabilities which can be achieved using modern technology including array antennas, advanced waveforms and advanced signal processing techniques.
