Technology Office

Investments cultivated and managed by the Technology Office support the development of new Mission Critical Technology for national security. Impactful projects in Emerging Technology, many of which take a decade or more to come to fruition, push the very frontiers of technology development. We also focus on fostering Innovation and Collaboration, both of which are essential to sustaining long-term technical excellence and relevance. The Artificial Intelligence Group, under the direction of the Technology Office, was recently established to advance R&D in AI being conducted across all Laboratory areas to expand capabilities to meet a broad spectrum of needs. We are also leading a Laboratory-wide effort to advance Climate Change Technology for National Security.

The Technology Office enables the development of technologies that address long-term challenges and emerging issues within Lincoln Laboratory’s core mission areas. To maintain an awareness of evolving national security problems and applicable technologies, the office interacts regularly with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering and other government agencies.

The Technology Office promotes research and development of new technologies and engineering solutions of growing relevance to national security. Staff are working at the frontiers of technology to transfer the latest advances to the Laboratory’s mission areas. Some investments, such as quantum information systems, may take years to come to fruition. In areas of increasing importance to the nation, such as energy and autonomy, the Laboratory is taking a lead role.

Our group develops fundamental and enabling artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to solve complex challenges and advance AI for the nation. Current research areas include applying AI to fuel scientific discovery of materials and biomaterials; exploring network science and its applications; employing AI as a teammate in making decisions; developing technology to increase trust in AI; and investigating the broad area of responsible AI and ethics.
