Security Services Department

Our Mission

MIT Lincoln Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center whose mission is to develop technology in support of national security. Our mission in the Security Services Department (SSD) is to create an innovative security architecture to accelerate the business of research. SSD is driving business transformation and innovation through the development and implementation of security products, services, and solutions. We foster an inclusive, opportunity-filled environment of empowered team members from diverse backgrounds.

Security Services Department Focus Areas

Our security professionals are driven to solve complex security problems in collaboration with Laboratory research teams and government counterparts across the following industrial security areas:

Physical Security and Emergency Management

The Physical Security and Emergency Management group provides 24x7 security, emergency management, and visitor and credential management services to support Laboratory facilities, personnel, property, and networks.

Cybersecurity

The Cybersecurity group enables research and development to protect information systems and networks at all classification levels. The group is responsible for Special Programs and Collateral Cybersecurity, Cybersecurity Risk Management, Cyber Forensics, and Communications Security. The group monitors, assesses, and mitigates internal and external threats through IT risk management, system authorization, operational mission support, incident command and response, and policy development.

Mission Security

Mission Security focuses on the protection of compartmented program classified information developed by or entrusted to the Laboratory. The team also manages Personnel Security and Secure Area construction specifications and provides program guidance that enables research and development in support of the Laboratory’s mission.

Security Audit and Compliance

The Security Audit and Compliance group comprises the Security Education Training and Awareness Team, the Industrial Security and Risk Assessment Team, and the Security Risk Management and Compliance Team who support all Laboratory programs with the goal of achieving exemplary risk-balanced compliance based on government regulations, security procedures, MIT Lincoln Laboratory standards, and security education for all Laboratory personnel.

Business Operations

Business Operations supports departmental budget planning; forecasting and analysis; expense report administration; labor distribution and time reporting; space planning, procurement, asset management, and oversight of the co-op program; and executive support to the Chief Security Officer for the Security Services Department.

Strategy and Project Management

The Strategy and Project Management Office focuses on strategic planning, continuous improvement, and project management for SSD. The group is also responsible for assessing process efficiency and ensuring alignment across the department. 

Investigations and Counterintelligence Office

The Investigations and Counterintelligence Office detects and mitigates risk, investigates security incidents, provides counterintelligence assessments, and serves as the primary federal law enforcement liaison. The group also collaborates with Human Resources and the Ethics and Compliance Assurance Office to ensure adherence to Laboratory procedures.
