Joseph Sobchuk
This fall, Joseph Sobchuk will return to his alma mater, Georgia Tech, as part of the Cyber Security and Information Sciences Division’s recruiting team. Only two years ago, he graduated with a master's degree in computer engineering and was ready to jump into a cybersecurity career. Now, he hopes to bring recent grads to the Laboratory’s growing cyber division.
Joe got his foot in the door at Lincoln Laboratory through three summer internships, first in another division and then in the cyber division's Secure Resilient Systems and Technologies Group, where he felt his interests fit well. "When I took a cybersecurity course in school, I realized how cool it is. It is a young field, and there are ever-evolving vulnerabilities and new attacks on things we care about, that we need to protect. I enjoy the dynamic aspects." Joe works primarily on cryptographic key management, which makes it possible to communicate securely between devices. One project he’s worked on extensively is a technique to secure communication to the nation’s satellites. Last fall, he published his first paper, which was about this technique, and presented it at a conference. "I really enjoyed that I could take ownership of something. I implemented this technique successfully, and then got to share that knowledge."
He’ll also be supervising his first summer intern and looks forward to being on the other side of the internship experience. Another thing he’s leading this summer is his group's yearly golfing get-together. "It's fun," he says, before adding, "because we’re mostly all terrible at it!"
